XOLOITZCUINTLES TO 2014 COPA CHIVAS SEMIFINALS

Club Tijuana 2-1 Monarcas Morelia: Week 5

GUADALAJARA – Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente’s youth team advances to the 2014 Copa Chivas semifinals with a 2-1 win against Monarcas Morelia and finishing in second place in the Group B standings.

Coach Franky Oviedo’s team advances in the international tournament Sunday Feb. 2 after winning three games, tying another and losing one in the group stage of the youth tournament.

The young Xoloitzcuintles finished the group stage with a good performance against Monarcas in which Rafael Agamez scored in the 48th minute via a penalty kick. Agamez converted the penalty kick after Monarcas was whistled for a handball in the penalty area. But it was Victor Ramirez who sent in the game-winner late in the game when he sent in the rebound off a free kick. Ramirez’ goal in the 57th minute sent Club Tijuana to the next round.

Morelia had tied the match 1-1 five minutes prior to Ramirez’ goal. Mario Diaz scored off his missed penalty kick. Club Tijuana’s goalkeeper stopped the penalty kick but Diaz got to the ball on the rebound and put it into net.

The Xoloitzcuintles will now face Club Atlas of Guadalajara Monday Feb. 3 (7:30 a.m. Pacific) at the Verde Valle facilities in Guadalajara.
