CLUB TIJUANA EARNS FIRST 2017 CLAUSURA COPA MX WIN

TIJUANA (Jan. 31, 2017) –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles played to a 2-1 win against visiting Correcaminos UAT in a Copa Corona MX Week 3 match Tuesday at Estadio Caliente.

Henry Martin and Yasser Corona scored for the Xoloitzcuintles while Roberto Saucedo found the net for the visitors.

It is the first win for the Xoloitzcuintles in the domestic cup pairing Mexican first division teams against second division teams. Club Tijuana also earned its first three points in the Group 1 standings.

Club Tijuana came out looking to make up for a 1-0 loss at Cimarrones de Sonora two weeks ago.

The Xoloitzcuintles took a 1-0 lead when Martin took a floating ball sent in by Guido Rodriguez on a deflection into the heart of the penalty area. Martin brought the ball down with his thigh and blasted it on a bounce past Correcaminos goalkeeper Miguel Centeno.

It was one of a handful of chances generated by coach Miguel Herrera’s team in the first half.

Club Tijuana came out fast in the second half. Corona found the net on a corner kick. He outjumped the defense and also beat Centeno, the goalkeeper.

Correcaminos cut the Club Tijuana lead 2-1 in the 58th minute when Saucedo took a rolling pass inside the heart of the penalty box. That’s where he fired a right-footed shot that squeezed past Xoloitzcuintles goalkeeper Luis Michel.

It was all the scoring of the night, despite the Xoloitzcuintles finishing the night playing with eight players. John Requejo was sent off with a direct red card in the 76th minute while Amando Moreno was shown his second yellow of the game in the 83rd minute. He was also sent off. Yasser Corona was taken off the pitch in an ambulance after taking a head to the back of his skull and hitting his face on the ground on a play inside the penalty box.

Club Tijuana will now return to LIGA MX action when it travels to face Club Leon in a Week 5 match at Estadio Nou Camp Saturday Feb. 4.
