XOLOITZCUINTLES DAY IN SAN DIEGO
Club Tijuana celebrates first anniversary since City proclamation
SAN DIEGO –It has been a year since members of Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente crossed the border in 2013 to receive a proclamation from San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez.
The Councilmember declared February 12 as “Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente Day” in the City of San Diego. The District 8 Councilmember gave the team a plaque proclaiming the honors. Former Club Tijuana striker Alfredo Moreno, Assistant General Manager Roberto Cornejo and the team mascot “Xolo Mayor” were there to accept the plaque.
“I am pleased to honor the Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente as they have been a source of pride for both San Diegans and those in Tijuana,” Alvarez said during the presentation last year.
Alvarez is the Councilmember for the Eighth Council District of the City of San Diego and ran for mayor of San Diego this week. His district as Councilmember includes the southern communities of San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Ocean View Hills, Nestor, Egger Highlands and the Tijuana River Valley in South San Diego County. He is currently the chair of the City Council’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee.
The ceremony was one of the items on the San Diego City Council general meeting.
Councilmember Alvarez honored Club Tijuana, the Mexican soccer LIGA MX champion, for its recent success on the field and it’s off field dedication and work in the community through its participation in the Crime Prevention Project carried out by the City of Tijuana’s Municipal Department of Public Safety. The project’s objective is to support and improve the future of Tijuana’s youth, encouraging them to stay away from drugs and violence by promoting sports.
The club promotes sports through its youth academies in Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Temecula and Chula Vista to hundreds of young athletes in the region.
The Xoloitzcuintles have been active in San Diego in recent years. Club Tijuana played in four exhibition games against Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy at the University of San Diego’s Torero stadium. It also played at Qualcomm Stadium against fellow Mexican team Club America and another friendly against America at Petco Park.
Club Tijuana has also reached out to fans by opening an official kiosk at the Plaza Bonita mall in National City to make the latest team products available to fans in San Diego without having to cross into Tijuana.
